The Village Deli's been a local Bloomington institution since 1980, when David Lockwood &Michael Paxton opened the tiny cafe (then on Kirkwood. Though they sold it to current owner Costello, most of the menu and recipes are unchanged. (Paxton’s Potatoes—a calorie-happy plate of home fries with sausage gravy, cheddar cheese, and chives—and Paxton’s Patty Melt, made with chicken and the Deli’s own “special sauce.”) The buttermilk pancakes, way bigger then your plate!! & homemade granola, sour-cream coffee cake, and salads are all made in-house from original Village Deli recipes. Jim & I have been eating there for 33yrs. Game days the noise level reaches a crescendo that blots out conversation but it's convivial & if u are IU alum u feel right at home.
You just answered your own question incorrectly. Its just fine.
It was great and the pancakes are definitely worth a try, but it's about 5 dollars for orange juice so be careful
Food is fantastic, everything from their breakfast wrap to pancakes to milkshakes. It is ALWAYS busy though, and consequently the service can be iffy sometimes. Definitely worth going at least once though.
Bathroom was clean. Workers were friendly. Everything was brought to me quickly. Unfortunately, my omelette was very bland and the produce did not taste or look fresh. My omelettes taste better. Good service doesn't save the food
This place is absolutely amazing! They are always busy but get you seated fairly quickly every time! You can also get coffee while you wait! They are so hospitable!
Good food, great service, and very few people. Go out and support this local restaurant.
Great place to eat breakfast at any time of day. The staff is usually college kids but they are always nice and accommodating. This place is usually pretty busy expect a wait , luckily there are tons of shops and things to do while you wait.
Some of the food felt rushed but I do understand, since we had a group of 10 or so, but that doesn't mean you should skip corners to make more food. Other than that, it's amazing service and I'm sure if we said something we'd have gotten another plate or something. But we didn't have a lot of time and didn't wanna be rude either. That's not to take away how great this place is when they're fully committed.
What a pathetic excuse for a restaurant. Frozen potatoes with room temp cheese and an over very hard egg. What a nightmare. The service was slow and not helpful. The waitress literally lost our bill, cleared it with the plates and it took 10 extra minutes to print a new one and pay. Wasnt worth a dime. Dont waste your money here.
Always good food and excellent service
Legendary Kirkwood landmark does a brisk business with simple, hearty classic breakfast foods and lunch sandwiches. My kids adore the piled-high whipped cream on the hot cocoas, as well as the hub-cap sized pancakes. If it weren't for the long lines, this would be our Sunday tradition.
Good, relatively inexpensive breakfast. I had a spinach, bacon, and onion scramble that came with so many fried hashbrowns that the plate was a sea of browned potatoes with an island of scrambled eggs. Son had the French toast, which was large enough that his mom and I both received a quarter slice ourselves. Wife had an omelette that she couldn't finish. Two coffees, and total without tip was under $30.
Awesome breakfast place, can occasionally have a very long wait.
Very, very good. My family goes there whenever we are in Bloomington. When my parents lived there for a while it was their favorite. The gluten free pancakes taste just like regular pancakes, just watch out because there may be cross contamination. The potatoes are amazing. Just home fries without gravy (but cheese!!!) are gluten free! They are great also! We had no wait, we just ate and got out😁 [their motto]. Despite having a slightly aggressive motto, the staff was amazing and very accommodating to the gluten free issues. Very helpful! Happy busy cafe-like environment. Definitely a place college kids go to for breakfast a lot!
First time for breakfast and it was really good. Service was excellent, coffee came quickly and the spinach scramble was tasty.
The place had decent food but the service was awful! Kept being over looked/ignored (hard to do during covid) and had terrible service the rest of the visit. Will not repeat
Very good food and great value! Got their biscuits and gravy along with the Hoosier scramble and both were excellent. Definitely a spot to go for breakfast with an empty stomach. You will not leave here not feeling full. Their was about a five minute wait and the staff there move quick and efficiently. Worth trying if you haven't already.
Great late lunch! Excellent service, WiFi & the food is always AWESOME! Bird for the Wise sandwich was very tasty... Could've used a little less mayo & chunky/fruity cranberry instead of just a spread. Side of fruit salad was*real* cut fruit, like you have at home---THANK YOU!!! 😋 Banana Nutella pancakes taste like banana bread with powdered sugar & Nutella drizzle...ohhhhh, so good!!! 😋
The ONLY reason for two stars are the servers that work here. Truly phenomenal young folks! Pleasant, on the ball, really this review is in no way a reflection on the service. The silverware was dirty, wrapped in the napkin with the paper band on it. The coffee cups are despicable, they need to be bleached then washed in the dish washer. When I first moved to Btown this was my favorite place to go. Now it no longer is. The cooks really need to check the menu and what ingredients go in what. When the menu says an ingredient I expect to see it on my plate..I have no idea what is going on there but I won't be back..
I just tried their seasonal pumpkin pancakes... They are the best thing ever. I don't regret this one bit. Do it.
Classic Bloomington eatery that has stood the test of time because of it's great food and friendly service. There will probably be a line out the door on most weekends but they keep things moving quickly and it's worth the wait for Paxton's potatoes, hot coffee, and giant pancakes.Very impressed with the steps they are taking to keep everyone safe during COVID. I hope Bloomington keeps Kirkwood pedestrian-only; it was a delight to sit under an umbrella and enjoy a nice morning brunch.
Best place for breakfast. Great service. Mackenzie was awesome
The Village Deli is is one of my favorite breakfast places in Bloomington. The place is clean, the food is great, and there's a wide variety of options for different dietary restrictions (i.e. gluten free, vegetarian). There are some spaces for larger groups, but most of the larger tables are outside. It's also aa goo place for families as almost all of the food is kid friendly. The service is good, but during the school year it can take a bit to get your food. This isn't a huge inconvenience as it's like that most places in Bloomington. It's also street only parking, so be aware of that. It's one of a handful of breakfast places in Bloomington that I recommend consistently and will continue to do so.
The potatoes are little french fry cubes, and they are amazing. It's a great place to go for diner style breakfast.
Highly recommended. Excellent customer service. Food was beyond what I thought it would be. Definitely will come back. Cant say enough how wonderful this place is from the atmosphere to the food
Breakfast served all day. Sausage gravy is wonderful & very peppery. Staff is very friendly. Carryout available. Full order of biscuits & gravy plus 2 eggs: $7.45 + tax. Decent size portions. Hoosier scramble is veey good. Will be busy morning after big party nights. Just a good popular Bloomington diner downtown.
Yummy foods with reasonable prices and good environment too.
Doesn't open until 8 am on Saturdays so had to wait awhile for it to open . Haven't been in years and was good. Salsas were homemade and spicy. Omlette was huge. Wish they had hit tea that wasn't just hot water and a tea bag but otherwise good breakfast and excellent service.
I'm told by my son that this place has the best breakfast in town (Bloomington)!
I love this place.....great memories w both my children while they were on campus and a favorite now that they are grown and gone! Great food and energy! Enjoyed the pumpkin pancakes and pumpkin butter...😍
Big breakfast, nice and hot! Great service.
Love the cinnamon roll pancake and everything else I've tried. Expect to leave with a doggy bag.
Old-timey environment with great food!
Went on a Sunday morning and was told it would be about 30 minutes until our table was ready. It was worth the wait. We shopped for a bit next door until we were called. Ordered the Paxton potatoes with two eggs up top. The mix of potatoes, sausage gravy, cheese and eggs in a bowl is a delicious combination. Highly recommend the Paxton potatoes and the Deli.
Lots of great menu choices. Well prepared food. Super staff. The breakfast tacos were excellent!
This is a lovely little restaurant in downtown Bloomington. It's located a couple of blocks from the IU Sample Gates. The decor and art are simple but vibrant. Oldies music added some fun; some songs ya just gotta hum along to!!🎵 The menu is pretty basic, all American diner fare. Not boring-menu items have a current twist. For example, gluten free and vegan options are available. A customer favorite is the dinner plate sized pancakes. I ordered the veggie omelette. My daughter ordered 1 of everything. 2 OE eggs, toast, fried potatoes, bacon, & biscuits and gravy. We shared a pancake for dessert. She was very hungry! The food was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Service was fast and friendly. I also enjoy that many of the staff are Indaina University students. If you're in a chatty mood, go during a slow hour. Ask your server about school. If they're not busy, you'll have an interesting little chat. Be sure to support higher education with a nice gratuity.
Great variety, quick service!
This place survives off nostalgia and the deadened taste buds of drunk college kids. I've tried 3 meals here and all were awful.
Talk about "Brunch Central"--- this place is overflowing on weekends and in the mornings. The food itself bearly gets a 3, but everyone loved it and the atmosphere is nice. The service can be rather slow on the weekend, but their bennies are tasty.
Great food and perfect location near campus! Try the pancakes, they’re amazing!
Love this place. Great good and great people!
I visit this restaurant almost every time I am in Bloomington. Good food, fun staff.
Very disappointed. I've came here many times but the last few times were all bad. This visit, the food was completely bland. Got strawberry waffles, scrambles eggs, bacon, corn beef hash with two over easy eggs. The only food that was good was the white toast. I didn't know you could mess up scrambled eggs and bacon. The bacon tasted like it was cooked in old burnt oil and the eggs tasted so bland and fake. The service was better than it was before so I'll give that a plus. Other than that, the food was just a hugr disappointment. I'll stick with Cloverleaf and Cracker barrel for breakfast. We will not be coming back to place.
Fresh food. Awesome options.
This is my first visit. It'll be my last. It's Mother's day, so of course people were packing into this place. Unfortunately, the staff are made up of no one older than 23, and clearly they were overwhelmed by the crowding. We were told a 20-30 minute wait. It took an hour! Next I witnessed poor planning, dropping menus on the floor and putting them on the table with out wiping them off! Then a young lady dropped some of our silverware and put them on our table 😡 I immediately called her out on this, telling her that is unacceptable and unprofessional, she removed them and disappeared for the remainder of our visit. Upon opening our silverware we discovered several pieces were still dirty with food🤢 The food, wasn't anything to brag about! It 10:30am when we arrived, it was 1pm when we exited. I won't be back.
This is actually Lounge 51, as I know it. It is a beatiful space, nice bar, great for after work or social gatherings; a coffee shop below, if you are not into alcohol. First experience of food was it smelled delicious (a big juicy burger). I tried the jerk chicken slider and burger slider. I would do the jerk chicken again, the burger slider was average; I'll get to that big juicy burger soon. More to come, it's a new spot for me!
